Can I still claim unemployment after i start working but havent received a paycheck yet?

March 16, 2011  |  Unemployment Articles

I lost my job a few weeks ago and just got approved for unemployment today. I also just got a call to start a new job tomorrow. now i know its against the law to collect a check from unemployment while also receiving a regular paycheck, but can i still collect unemployment the 3 weeks i have to work before i get my first paycheck?

You are very lucky to get a job so soon - many have been unemployed for months and even years. you are eligible to collect any unemployment benefits you were approved for - up to the day you start a new job. you just have to return the cards that you were sent with the proper information - on the back it asks when you start or started a new job (by date) you fill that in and send it back. In a few days - usually 7 or 8 - you'll get checks for the unemployment benefit you are entitled to!

You can claim unemployment for the week(s) that you did not work but have not yet claimed.

You are not allowed to claim unemployment for any week that you worked or for any week for which you will be paid eventually (even if you have not yet been paid).

No, because you will eventually get paid for this time.

But you will get the back pay for unemployment from the weeks that you were not working that you haven't gotten paid for yet (most states do have a one week waiting period before you can earn unemployment).

No, you can't.
